Sanofi showcases new sustainability initiative

Health Industry Hub | December 13, 2023 |

ESG: In enhancing pharmaceutical supply chain logistics, Sanofi Australia in partnership with Mediport, has introduced an innovative active cold chain distribution service. This pioneering initiative aims to improve the transportation of medicines and vaccines to ensure their integrity and efficacy upon arrival in Tasmania, while significantly curbing carbon emissions.

Statistics underscore the healthcare industry’s carbon footprint, accountable for 4.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions and an even more noteworthy 7% in Australia. Alarmingly, these emissions surpass those of the aviation industry by over double, signalling an urgent need for intervention.

At the 28th United Nations Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai, Ged Kearney MP, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, launched Australia’s inaugural National Health and Climate Strategy. Around 70% of the health system’s global emissions footprint is derived from the supply chain, including transport and disposal of medical goods. To address this, the government plans to collaborate with states, territories, industry, and suppliers to establish green procurement guidelines and foster sustainable resource use.

Ruhul Moula, Head of Supply Chain at Sanofi Australia & New Zealand, expressed enthusiasm for this collaborative endeavour, stating “For our team, success is achieved when our science reaches Australians who need it, precisely when they need it. This collaboration with Mediport helps us deliver our medicines and vaccines in a sustainable way across Tasmania.

“The active cold chain service delivers greater efficiency, visibility, and peace-of-mind, with shipments continuously monitored and managed during their journey across the Bass Strait. It also reduces the need for airfreight and reliance on shipper boxes bound for landfill, delivering a more efficient experience for our customers too.”

It is estimated that flights emit 500 grams of carbon dioxide for each metric tonne of cargo per kilometre of transportation. Whereas, ships emit only between 10 to 40 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

Marcus Lethlean, Managing Director at Mediport, shared stressed the significance of active refrigeration in preserving the integrity of medicines and vaccines throughout their journey, assuring precise temperature maintenance even during transportation delays or closures.

Expressing personal connection and commitment to the cause, Mr Lethlean added, “We’ve worked towards delivering this service for years and its operation brings particular joy for me as my grandparents are from Tasmania. I want to ensure they, and all Australian’s, have access to reliable supply chain services that meet the requirements of the precious cargo they need.”
